Body Under General Anesthesia Tracks Closer to Coma than Sleep

January 10, 2011

Article published in Scientific American
by Katherine Harmon on December 29, 2010

Studying brain waves and physiologic patterns in patients under general anesthesia might help researchers build new neurological models of disorders, such as comas and insomnia

DEEP SLEEP?:

Patients undergoing significant operations, such as major cardiac or transplant surgery, typically require general anesthesia. But putting patients to “sleep” might not be the best way to describe the process, argued the authors of a new review paper, published in the December 30 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

What anesthesiologists are really doing is closer to putting patients—close to 60,000 each day in the U.S.—into a drug-induced coma. “It’s a reversible coma, but it’s nevertheless a coma,” says Emery Brown, a professor of anesthesiology at Harvard Medical School and coauthor of the paper.

General anesthesia before major surgery dips brain activity (as measured by electroencephalogram, or EEG) down to levels akin to brain-stem death. For the most part, Brown has found that anesthesiologists talk about the process in colloquial terms, telling patients they will be “asleep,” rather than “unconscious”—likely in an effort to not make a medical ordeal any scarier than it already needs to be.

Cosmetic Surgery on the increase… especially with the men

November 26, 2010
Even though the last few years have been financially gloomy – the UK population has still wanted to look its best! Despite the recession, BAAPS (British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons) have reported that over 36,400 cosmetic procedures were carried out during 2009. Their figures show that depite the downturn in the economy, there has been a steady increase in the number of people having cosmetic surgery over the past few years. In fact, they recorded a rise of 6.7% from the year 2008 to 2009. Male surgery has proved to be one of the fastest growing areas, which has seen a 21% growth in demand. ACTION UPDATE
released by Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA)
04/10/10

The MHRA has issued the following information regarding women who have been implanted with PIP silicone gel filled implants after 01 January 2001:

There is no current evidence of health risk associated with the filler and there is no indication for routine action in the form of implant removal (explantation) or ultrasound.

Information on the testing of PIP implants is available on the MHRA website. Further information about clinical management is available on the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS) and the Association of Breast Surgery.

Results from tests commissioned by the MHRA have not shown any evidence of genotoxicity or chemical toxicity of the filler material. One of the French genotoxicity tests was, however, inconclusive and further testing will be conducted by AFSSAPS (French medical device regulatory authority) with results expected in early 2011.

Mechanical testing of the implant shells carried out by AFSSAPS suggests that there may be an increased risk of rupture. However, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) of the Australian government also carried out tests on PIP silicone gel filled breast implants and found that these implants conformed to the relevant international standards for this type of product, including those for gel cytotoxicity and shell strength.
